Digital Depression

Digital depression expert Nassir Ghaemi joins Vienna Live to discuss the mental health pandemic that is wreaking havoc among teenagers

Selfie-satisfaction: In the social media realm, what you see is seldom what you get.
Too much in the sun: in the social media realm, clouds are few and far between

Social media is an inescapable part of life today. To Boomers, Generation X and Millennials, that means the privilege of staying in constant touch with far-away friends and online dating.

But to Generation Z, social media is not a “fun” virtual space that complements physical reality, it is physical reality. In other words, the physical and social media realms are one and the same.

Why is that a problem? Well, it means that their day has no beginning nor end. Teenagers are in the middle of something happening, and they are always missing out on it.

Sound stressful? It is and “digital depression” has become the leading cause of anxiety, depression and suicidality in teens.

Let’s get out of our comfort zone and face digital depression head on. Professor Nassir Ghaemi (Tufts University), the field’s leading expert, joins us for an in-depth conversation that every parent needs to hear.
