“Cowboy songs are not jazz!”, you are probably saying loudly to yourself. Well, it turns out that many of the famous “Western trail songs” were written by jazz giants such as Johnny Mercer and recorded by the crooner-in-chief, Bing Crosby. But the names of music fade away; the way it speaks to our shared human experience resounds stronger each passing day. Jazz vocalist Hilary Gardner says it well in the liner notes to On the Trail with The Lonesome Pines, her pioneering new album; “The songs on this album evoke all the romantic mythology of the American West and remind us that the answers to many of life’s big questions can be found in contemplative solitude, the beauty of the natural world, and the arms of a loved one.” Come welcome Hilary Gardner to Vienna Live!
