Scarlett Saad has probably performed more than any other musician in Lebanon, regardless of gender. As one of many Middle Eastern societies defined by hypersensitive interactions among tribal patriarchs, nepotism and regular armed conflict, it’s all too easy to overlook a young woman’s contributions to Lebanese creative industries. But maybe that’s exactly where Lebanon’s “nation building” – that is, the ineluctable forging of a unique collective civic identity, one based on common values more than common bloodline – is happening.
